USAF Publications Process

All publications are prepared in accordance with DAFI 90-160, *Publications and Forms Management*.

There are four main publication types:

DAF Policy Directive (DAFPD)

Orders of the Secretary of the Air Force containing directive policy statements.

They initiate, govern, delegate authorities/responsibilities, and regulate actions within specified areas.

DAFIs, AFIs, SPFIs

Orders of the Secretary of the Air Force, certified and approved at the DAF level.

What they do
Generally instruct readers on "what to do" — direct action, ensure compliance to standard actions across the DAF.

May be supplemented at any level below the DAF unless otherwise stated.

DAFMANs, AFMANs, SPFMANs

Orders of the Secretary of the Air Force.

What they do
Generally instruct readers on "how to" — detailed procedures and additional technical guidance.

May be either: - An extension of a DAFI/AFI/SPFI (detailed procedures) - An alternative to one

Nondirective Publications

Informational — suggest guidance that may be modified to fit circumstances.

Compliance is expected, but not mandatory. Used as reference aids.

Includes: pamphlets, doctrine, tactics/techniques/procedures (TTPs), directories, handbooks, catalogs, visual aids, and product announcements.

Publication Series Numbers

Series numbers of publications are organized based on USAF Specialty Code.
