Why Fitness Levels Matter

Adequate physical fitness levels ensure every Airman can properly support the USAF mission while performing at optimal capacity.
Three-Hour Window
3-Hour Window
All components of the fitness assessment must be completed within a three-hour window on the same day.
Extenuating Circumstances
If FAC staff or augmentees determine extenuating circumstances prevent completion of the test (rapidly changing or severe weather, natural disasters, emergencies, or safety issues), then all components must be rescheduled and completed at the earliest opportunity.
Component Order
Assessment Sequence
The body composition component is the first component of the fitness assessment.
1. Body Composition — measuring height and weight
2. Muscular Strength — choose:
- 1-minute push-ups, OR
- 2-minute hand release push-ups (HRPU)
3. Core Endurance — choose:
- 1-minute sit-ups, OR
- 2-minute cross leg reverse crunch (CLRC), OR
- Timed forearm plank
4. Cardiorespiratory Fitness — last component:
- 1.5-mile run, OR
- 20 meter HAMR, OR
- 2 kilometer walk (if not medically cleared to run)
Mandatory Rest
5-Minute Minimum Rest
There is a minimum five-minute rest period between components.
Shift Worker Note
The assessment components should be scheduled to allow adequate rest for members on irregular or shift work hours.
Reserve Component Specifics
Reserve Duty Status
Reserve members must be in a duty status for fitness assessments.
ARC Retest Window
ARC Airmen will be required to retest no later than the next Unit Training Assembly or Regularly Scheduled Drill when official fitness assessments are being conducted.
Videotaping Prohibition
No Videotaping
Videotaping of fitness assessments is not allowed, nor should it be used in the appeal process.
