The Pledge of Allegiance is not traditionally recited at military events.
Outdoor Events with the Pledge
Outdoor Pledge in Uniform
At outdoor events or social functions where the pledge is rendered, military personnel in uniform will:
- Stand at attention
- Remain silent
- Face the flag
- Salute
Outdoor in Civilian Attire
Outdoor Pledge Civilian
When outdoors in civilian attire:
- Remove any non-religious headgear with right hand
- Hold it at the left shoulder, with the hand being over the heart
Indoor Events
Military Personnel in Uniform
Indoor Pledge Uniform
At indoor events, military personnel in uniform will:
- Stand at attention
- Remain silent
- Face the flag
- NOT salute
Indoor Civilian-Majority Events
Indoor Civilian Events Optional
At indoor events where participants are primarily civilians or in civilian attire, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is OPTIONAL for those in uniform.
