10 PFE Study Tips That Actually Work

Scoring well on the Promotion Fitness Exam isn't about studying harder — it's about studying smarter. These tips come from the study science behind how memory actually works, combined with what high-scoring Airmen consistently do differently from everyone else.

1.Stop rereading — start recalling

Reading AFH 1 cover-to-cover feels productive but research shows you forget 70% within 48 hours. Instead, read a section once, then immediately test yourself on it. Active recall — forcing your brain to retrieve information — creates stronger neural pathways than passive reading ever will. This is why practice questions beat highlighting.

2.Use spaced repetition, not cramming

Cramming the week before your test window is the #1 mistake. Spaced repetition spreads your study over weeks, showing you material right before you forget it. Each successful recall extends the interval. After 4-5 repetitions spaced over 30 days, information moves into long-term memory. RankLab's Smart Review automates this with Leitner boxes.

3.Study ADTC A-depth sections first

Not all AFH 1 material is weighted equally. ADTC depth A sections require the deepest knowledge — memorize, apply, and analyze. These are your highest-yield study targets. Depth B and C sections still appear on the test, but if you're short on time, getting A-depth material locked in gives you the best return on your study hours.

4.Take a full PFE simulation early

Don't save practice exams for the end. Take a full 80-question timed simulation in your first week. You'll probably score low — that's the point. It shows you exactly where your gaps are, so every study session after that is targeted instead of random. RankLab's PFE Simulator mirrors the real format: 60 knowledge + 20 SJT.

5.Review every missed question the same day

When you miss a question, don't just read the answer and move on. Read the explanation, find the AFH 1 section it came from, and understand why the correct answer is correct. Then add it to your review deck. Missed questions are your most valuable study material — they show you exactly what you don't know yet.

6.Set a daily goal and track streaks

Studying for 20 minutes every day beats studying for 3 hours once a week. Set a daily question goal — even 10 questions keeps the material fresh. Tracking your streak creates accountability. Miss a day and the streak resets, which is surprisingly motivating. RankLab tracks your daily goal progress and streak automatically.

7.Don't skip SJT preparation

The Situational Judgment Test is 20 questions on the PFE and catches many Airmen off guard. Unlike knowledge questions, SJT scenarios test your understanding of Air Force leadership competencies — there are 24 of them. You can't memorize your way through these. Practice identifying the most and least effective responses in realistic scenarios.

8.Study in short, focused sessions

Your brain can only maintain deep focus for about 25-30 minutes. Use the Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes of focused study, 5 minute break, repeat. Four rounds = two hours of quality study. This works especially well with practice questions — do a set of 15-25 questions per session, review your misses, then take a break.

9.Know your WAPS math

Your PFE score is only one component of your total WAPS score. Understanding how the points break down — TIG, TIS, decorations, EPB, PFE, and (for some AFSCs) SKT — helps you know how much you need from the PFE. Use a WAPS calculator to see exactly what PFE score you need to be competitive for the cutoff.

10.Study on any device, including gov computers

You have downtime at work — use it. Web-based study tools work on government computers where mobile apps are blocked. Pull up a quick 10-question practice during lunch or between tasks. Those micro-sessions add up fast. RankLab works in any browser, so you can study on your phone, personal laptop, or your work computer.
