2026 WAPS Score Calculator
Your WAPS score determines whether you promote. It's a combination of test scores (PFE and SKT), decorations, and your EPB marks. Understanding exactly how the points add up helps you know what PFE score you need to be competitive.
⚠️ Heads up: TIG and TIS no longer add points
A lot of older calculators and blog posts still claim Time in Grade and Time in Service add up to 100 combined WAPS points. That's outdated. The Air Force eliminated TIG and TIS points effective the 17E5/17E6/17E7/17E9 cycles. Today they only matter for eligibility — not score. We'll explain what actually counts below.

How WAPS Scoring Works in 2026
Today, your WAPS score is built from four components: PFE, SKT (when applicable), EPB marks, and decorations. The maximum total is 475 points. Here's how each component breaks down:
Your Promotion Fitness Examination, based on AFH 1 (60 knowledge questions and 20 SJT items). The number of correct answers is converted to your scaled WAPS score. If your AFSC is SKT-exempt, the PFE counts for 200 points (doubled).
Specialty Knowledge Test based on your AFSC CDCs and technical references. Not all AFSCs require an SKT — check your WAPS catalog. If you're SKT-exempt, the PFE is doubled to compensate.
Your last 3 EPRs in current grade. The most recent EPR is worth the most: Promote Now = 250, Must Promote = 220, Promote = 200. The 2nd EPR adds 10–20 points and the 3rd adds 5–15. Not Ready Now awards 0. This is the single largest WAPS component.
Points for medals and decorations per AFP 36-2241. AFAM = 1 pt, AFCM = 3 pts, MSM = 5 pts, etc. Capped at 25 total. These are fixed at test time — you can't change them last-minute.
What Happened to TIG and TIS?
Before 2017, Time in Grade was worth up to 60 points (0.5 per month, capped at 10 years) and Time in Service was worth up to 40 points (1/6 per month, capped at 20 years). Together they could add 100 points to your total — about 22% of the available 460.
The Air Force eliminated TIG and TIS points starting with the 17E5, 17E6, 17E7, and 17E9 cycles. The reasoning: longevity alone doesn't reflect competence, and rewarding it crowded out high-performing junior airmen. The change shifted weight toward what you actually do — your test scores and EPB marks.
TIG and TIS still matter for eligibility. You can't test for SSgt without 3 years TIS and 6 months TIG, or for TSgt without 5 years TIS and 23 months TIG. But once you meet the gates, those numbers don't add a single point to your score.
Eligibility Requirements (2026)
| Rank | Min TIS | Min TIG | Skill Level | PECD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SSgt (E-5) | 3 years | 6 months | 5-Level | 31 Mar |
| TSgt (E-6) | 5 years | 23 months | 7-Level | 31 Dec |
| MSgt (E-7) | 8 years | 24 months | 7-Level | 31 Dec |
| SMSgt (E-8) | 11 years | 20 months | 7-Level | 30 Sep |
| CMSgt (E-9) | 14 years | 21 months | 9-Level | 31 Jul |
What Score Do You Need?
Promotion cutoffs vary by AFSC and cycle. In recent E-5 cycles, scoring 75+ on the PFE puts you in a strong position for most career fields. For E-6, competition is tighter — aim for 80+ on the PFE.
You also need to meet minimum thresholds: at least 40 on the PFE, and if you take the SKT, at least 40 on that too — with a combined PFE+SKT minimum of 90. Failing any minimum disqualifies you regardless of your total WAPS score.
How to Maximize Your Score
Your decorations and EPB marks are essentially fixed at test time. The only WAPS components you can directly improve in the short term are your PFE and SKT scores. Every correct answer is one more point toward the cutoff.
A structured study plan using spaced repetition and targeted practice is the most efficient way to maximize your test scores. RankLab's WAPS Calculator lets you plug in your known values — decorations, EPB marks, expected SKT — and then adjust your projected PFE score to see exactly how many total points you'd have. That helps you set a realistic PFE target based on your AFSC's historical cutoff.
